All of these characteristics depend on the physical properties of alumina.
The indicators used to characterize the physical properties of alumina include: angle of repose, α-Al2O3 content, bulk density, particle size, specific surface area, and wear coefficient.
1. Antefix. The antefix of alumina refers to the angle at which materials naturally accumulate on a smooth surface. Alumina with a larger antefix is more easily dissolved in electrolytes, allowing it to cover the electrolyte crust well during the electrolysis process, resulting in less loss of material.
2. The content of a-Al2O3 in alumina reflects the degree of roasting of the alumina. The higher the degree of roasting, the greater the content of a-Al2O3. The hygroscopicity of alumina deteriorates as the content of a-Al2O3 increases. Therefore, alumina used for electrolysis requires a certain amount of a-Al2O3. However, the solubility of a-Al2O3 in electrolytes is inferior to that of Υ-Al2O3.

4. Particle size. The particle size of alumina refers to the degree of its thickness. The particle size of alumina must be appropriate. If it is too coarse, it will dissolve slowly in the electrolyte and may even precipitate; if it is too fine, it will easily fly away and be lost.
5. 比表面积。氧化铝的比表面积指的是材料的总表面积,包括外部表面积和每单位重量的内部孔隙表面积。这是衡量物质活性的重要指标。具有较大比表面积的氧化铝在电解质中具有良好的溶解性,活性较高,但同时也容易吸收水分。
6. 磨损系数。磨损系数指的是在一定的控制条件下,样品在流化床上经过磨损后,颗粒尺寸分布的变化百分比。磨损系数是一个物理指标,用于表征氧化铝的强度。
Based on the physical properties of alumina, it can be further divided into three types: granular, floury, and intermediate. These three types of alumina differ significantly in physical properties. Granular alumina has a lower bulk density, a larger specific surface area, a slightly smaller angle of repose, contains a smaller amount of α-Al2O3, has more coarse and uniform particles, and is stronger. Floury alumina has a higher bulk density, a smaller specific surface area, contains a larger amount of β-Al2O3, and has finer and more uniform particles. Intermediate alumina has a moderate bulk density, a moderate specific surface area, contains a moderate amount of both α- and β-Al2O3, and has a balance of coarse and fine particles.The amount of α-Al2O3 contains more fine particles and is weaker. The intermediate type of alumina has physical properties that fall between the two. The physical properties of various types of alumina are shown in Table 1-3.
