When the filter medium contains extremely fine particles, a dense filter cake is formed on the medium, or the pores of the filter medium are blocked, preventing filtration. Additionally, when the filter medium contains viscous, gel-like, or highly compressible particles, the formed filter cake creates significant resistance to the filtrate. In such cases, a solid particle that is hard and can form a loose filter residue can be added to the filter medium, or the filter medium can be made into a paste and applied to the filter medium to form a looser filter cake, allowing the filtrate to flow freely. This solid particle is known as a filter aid.

The function of filter aids is to reduce filtration resistance, improve filtration speed, and enhance clarity. Filter aids should be chemically stable, insoluble, hard, and irregularly shaped fine particles, capable of forming a loose structure and a filter cake that is almost incompressible.

1. Commonly used filter aids

Xinyang Hualan perlite filter aid is a type of irregularly shaped porous particle made from perlite. Its main component is SiO2, which gives it high inertness and insolubility. It can form a hard, incompressible filter cake, making it the most commonly used filter aid. Talcum powder has low adsorption capacity but good dispersion of colloids. It can adsorb excess volatile oils and some pigments in aqueous solutions, making it suitable for filtering filtrates containing mucus and gum. Additionally, when preparing aromatic water solutions with volatile oils, talcum powder is often used as a filter aid. It should be noted that talcum powder is very fine and not easily filtered out. Activated carbon is commonly used in the filtration of injections, as it has strong adsorption properties. It can adsorb pyrogens and microorganisms and also has a decolorizing effect. However, this product can adsorb drugs, especially alkaloids, so caution must be exercised when using it. Pulp has the function of filtering and dehydrating, and it is widely used in the production of traditional Chinese medicine injections, especially for processing certain liquid medications that are difficult to filter out.

2. Methods of using filter aids

(1) Add the filter aid to the filter slurry, stir evenly, and then filter to form a porous, loose filter cake on the filter medium. Repeat the filtration process to obtain a clear solution. This method is suitable for filter slurries with low solid content, especially those containing viscous or gelling substances. The amount of filter aid used is 0.1% to 0.5%.

(2) Prepare the filter aid into a paste with an appropriate amount of filter medium, then add it to the filter medium. Filter by suction to form a layer of filter aid with a thickness of 1 to 5mm, and then filter the medicinal liquid.

This filtration method can prevent the pores of the filtration medium from being blocked by fine particles or adhesives, allowing a clear solution to be obtained at the beginning of the filtration process. The methods of (1) and (2) can also be used in combination.

As the amount of filter aid increases, the filtration speed also increases. However, exceeding the optimal amount often results in a slowdown in filtration speed, and the clarity of the filtrate does not improve. Therefore, it is best to conduct tests when using filter aid to determine the appropriate amount.

Recommendations for the amount of filter aids to be added in liquid filtration:

1. Food: 0.5~2.0KG/1000L

2. Antibiotic fermentation liquid filtration: 10~100kg/1000L

3. Enzyme preparation: 10~50kg/1000L.
